Welcome To Newport South of Boston. This Mansion was designed by Renowned Architect, Richard Morris Hunt. Born to a wealthy family he traveled and studied in Europe in the mid 1800¿s He brought his lavish interiors and architectural details that he molded after those found in European Castles and Palaces to the United States. Some of his well known work lives in Newport Rhode Island with the design of The Vanderbilt Marble House and The Breakers. For those that have not visited Newport you may recognize his work as the entrance to The Metropolitan Museum. This residence was constructed for Dr. Howard Hunt in 1911 for his daughter. Unfortunately the property was taken over in World War II by the US Government along with 60 acres (at that time) for a submarine sighting station by ¿eminent domain¿ and then housed the US Coast Guard and operated as a radio transmitter station from approximately 1842 to 1975. The property was purchased and restored over a ten year period of time beginning in the late 70¿s.
